It all started almost 30 years ago, with the initiative
of 1 wonderful woman,
Gloria McPherson ( an
Angel sent to care for animals), who just
couldn’t stand the fact that so many animals were
walking around without a home in our county. She started
the San-Chris Adopt a Pet Organization and she alone has
placed over Thousands of unwanted and abandoned dogs and
cats in loving and caring homes.
The organization
has for the last few years been more or less dormant,
mainly because Gloria herself is getting up in age (80
years) and with only the help of her son who is very ill
at this time, her Farm still has dogs and cats that never were
adopted that have been dropped off on her doorstep by
people that just didn’t want their animal anymore.
Gloria has taken these dogs in, and now they are mostly
older dogs with medical needs and she has given them a
warm and well deserved home where they can live their
life till the end. There is never a day that she isn’t
out and about making sure that the animals are well fed
and in a good healthy condition. All bills for these
animals have been paid by her, without the help of the
county, the city or any organization.
This year 2008,
in April to be exact, the San-Chris Organization has
been revitalized and Gloria isn’t alone anymore in her
struggle to find good homes for the unwanted and
abandoned puppies of Claiborne County. The San-Chris
Adopt a Pet organization is currently being reorganized
and renamed to the San-Chris Adoption and Fostering
Organization and so far with the help of a few
volunteers the organization has been able to adopt out
almost 70 unwanted, mistreated, starved puppies. Most
animals have been put on the puppy wagon, a transport
that will take the puppies to an
ASPCA
no kill shelters in the United States. All puppies that
leave this county or that have been adopted out in this
county are all in excellent health, but that isn’t the
case when they come in. The organization picks up dogs
that have been abandoned alongside the road, under caved
in houses, or that have been found in drain pipes. Most
of these animals were malnourished and underfed,
dehydrated, mostly covered with fleas and eat up with
various types of worms and some even covered with
Sarcoptic
or
Demodectic
mange. Most all have the
coccidia organisms in its intestine which
we have to keep in Isolation for 10 days away from the
other puppies so those we have worked so hard on to get
healthy don’t get it again or at all. It causes them to
have diarrhea and can be treated in non severe cases
very easily. This medication can cost up to 80 dollars a
bottle for a litter of 6 or 7 of puppies that have came
in.
The organization
is proud to announce that they will fight for every dog,
no matter what shape or condition it arrives in and as
soon as the animal leaves our county, it will have had
all its medical shots, vaccinations, worm treatments and
will have a clean bill of health given by a registered
veterinarian.
All of this is
done by a few volunteers that put their own money into
the well being of the animals and a few fundraisers we
have had. To be able to grow however, the organization
is in a desperate need for donations of all kinds so we
can continue to help these animals. Of course money
would be the best thing, but even when you have some old
dog houses or cages, leashes, collars, toys, food or
blankets, the organization is grateful for all kind of
help that you can give. We even come and pick it up at a
time that is convenient for you. We need some sponsors
who will donate to us on a regular basis and we will be
happy to give credit where it is due. We are a
non-profit organization and our books are open to the
public at anytime they want to be seen. We are most
thankful for the help we have already received, but this
alone is like a needle in a haystack compared to the
help we need to keep San-Chris alive and going for when
even the Claiborne Animal Shelter is built, because as
members and friends of the shelter they we need the help
of San-Chris and we will be more than happy to help an
assist them. We also want
to help educate the community and school children about
the importance of being responsible pet owners as well
as the importance of spaying/neutering their animals so
there are not so many dogs and cats euthanized.
We do not buy or sell dogs, nor do we offer any type
of consignment services. We are an all-volunteer,
nonprofit organization. The adoption fees and donations
we receive are used ONLY to help cover our direct
operating expenses (e.g. veterinary care, medicines,
food, transport costs, etc.).
Without public donations (no matter how small), foster
families to assist in the temporary care of these
unfortunate dogs, and adopters who are willing to give a
special Dog a second chance at a life of love and
"belonging", we could not be successful in our
endeavors.
We sincerely thank all of those who have helped, and
continue to help, in our efforts to give EVERY Dog
a loving, caring PERMANENT home!
I looked at all the
caged animals in the shelter...the cast-offs of human
society. I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and
dread, sadness, and betrayal. I was angry.
"God," I said, "this is terrible! Why don't you do
something?" God was silent for a moment, and then spoke
softly, "I have done something," was the reply. "I
created you." ~Jim Willis
We would like to say a very special
thank you to some people who have helped us in so many
ways, we will always be grateful to them. Tammy from
Union County Humane Society, Sharon Cherry from
Rutledge, Rocky from Granger County, and Dr Kim
Carney with the Harrogate Hospital for Animals,
and our friends Liza, Dianne, Glenn and Ann Bowling who
are part of the Claiborne Animal Shelter as ourselves,
and anyone else who took the time to help or donate
something to help with San-Chris. They are angels placed on earth to help animals
and I don't know how we would have made it this far with out
them.
